Summary of economic development career to date…
I had around two years working at the East of England Development Agency in their Enterprise Team in the mid-noughties and then moved to Essex County Council in 2007 where I had various Strategy and Policy roles, mainly relating to economic development. I started working with the South East LEP in 2014/15 and took over in April 2016.
The professional achievement I am most proud of is…
Making the South East LEP a credible organisation with a strong delivery record. The large geography of the LEP meant that its formative years were difficult. It needed a thorough overhaul of its operating framework and I have delivered that. The knock-on impact has been increased investment in the area on the basis of our strong reputation for good governance and open and transparent approach to decision making.
If I could implement one economic development policy, it would be…
Build on location-specific clustering initiatives, such as Enterprise Zones, where guarantees are made around connectivity and perhaps reduced business rates to encourage the strengthening of the economy. These could be more strategically placed – i.e. adjacent to Town Centres – and rely less on new build. The incentives afforded to early Enterprise Zones should be rekindled.
